Artist Statement

My work is an invitation to enter an evocative space, depth and surface scape. It’s a scape where layers of paint and a plethora of materials have transported us through to my current conclusion. The scape as it exists now has not always been this way. There have been many forms, transformations, maps and chapters that moved us to where we find yourselves now.

The scape is ever-changing like maps after a catastrophic event. The paintings from the beginning to the end are made up of endless decisions, deliberate risks, experiments, chances, constructs, deconstructs and a response to what lies there in the present and what was there before.

The paintings suggest states of constant flux, which are often drowned out and unsettled with shifting layers of movement and then sediment and then movement again. Sometimes the movement is like a dance, graceful and elegant with bursts of thunderous hypnotic beats.  Other times the movement is more like a struggle and sometimes a fight; it can be a real mess with a rawness that is both fleeting and in your face. It is in these moments that the most deliberate decisions are made to bring the painting scape back to a place of heightened visual significance.

The end result is a capture of the journey of what was there before with all of the dances, risks and fights that had occurred along the way.

We often hear, “the end justifies the means”; Faith thinks of this concept differently. “I believe the means are just as important if not more so than the end, with in my work, life and how I approach each moment. To think of this concept as it relates to my work; I dwell on all of the endless decisions, deliberate risks, experiments, constructs and deconstructs I implement throughout my process. Each and every decision whether painstakingly thought out, or randomly layered transports us to where we find ourselves at the conclusion. The past (what was there before) is just as important as the end and usually you are able to see it peeking through in a plethora of ways with in each piece.”

Faith’s contemporary abstract paintings are an emphasis on surface, space and depth exploration through process and material experimentation often provoking an evocative response with her sophisticated approach to composition. There tends to be a battle, or a conflict between darkness and light, surface and depth, and movement and sediment brought about by layers of paint from high texture to glass like atmospheric fluid surfaces with risk being a quest of extreme importance. Every piece is a unique conclusion of the endless exploration of themes and processes developed in her everyday studio work.
